FAQs

is hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is very safe. If you are suffering from a very serious medical or psychiatric issue, it may not be appropriate for you to have hypnotherapy, at least initially or by itself. But for 99% of people, hypnosis is safe, meaning that it does not produce any harmful or adverse effects. Although there are some acute conditions for which medical attention may be necessary, I fully believe that hypnosis is a far better option than drugs for many problems, and this has been verified in studies for example on depression and anxiety. Indeed, perhaps it is worrying that we do not consider the safety of drugs when treating some psychological conditions.

Am I under the hypnotherapist’s control, and can they make me do anything they want?

No, absolutely not! In hypnosis you are in s state we call “trance”, where your peripheral attention is reduced, as is your attention to any negative self talk. In other words your attention is narrowed down and highly focused on the hypnotherapists suggestions, but you are still aware of what is going on, and you cannot be made to do anything that goes against your own rules or morality. If a hypnotherapist tried to make you do something that you didn’t deem acceptable, you would just break the trance state, as easily as you might get up from a movie you are engrossed in (a form of trance) to answer your spouse (or not! :))

Does hypnosis really work or is it just wishful thinking?

There is plenty of evidence and scientific controlled trials to show the effectiveness of hypnotherapy for hundreds of conditions from depression to insomnia, from chronic pain to psychosomatic conditions and even physical ones. The power of your own mind-body in healing yourself cannot be underestimated. Your unconscious is extremely powerful, and hypnosis allows it to be mobilised towards your own purposes and positive healing.

Can I get stuck in the hypnotic trance state?

Again, no. It helps to have a “count up” process to bring you to the surface as it were, but this is more important in therapy sessions and if you are doing self-hypnosis during the daytime. It can help you emerge quickly, feeling refreshed and alert. However you can do this yourself as well! You can’t stay stuck in trance.
